Former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez got the most votes in the nine-way March primary, but her frontrunner status was repeatedly thrown into doubt due to shaky performances on the campaign trail. Businessman Andrew White, the son of former Gov. Mark White, framed himself as the kind of moderate candidate that would be more competitive against Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in the fall. Even before Valdez won the runoff, Abbott had begun treating her as the Democratic nominee.
