Joseph Kopser vs. Mary Wilson: Texas Democratic U.S. House District 21 runoff results

U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-San Antonio, set off a scramble when he announced he was retiring from representing the 21st Congressional District, which runs from South Austin to San Antonio and extends westward into the Hill Country.

Mary Wilson surprised many when she emerged as the top vote-getter in the March Democratic primary, despite running a campaign far less well-funded or polished than Joseph Kopser. Kopser's mission for the runoff is much like it was for the primary: prove to voters he is the best Democrat to put the traditionally Republican district in play this fall and try to avoid any further surprises.

The runoff proved to be a different story.
